The Conjuring....
James Wan's (Saw, Insidious and Dead Silence) newest masterpiece in suspense is The Conjuring, which tells the story of the Parren family who move into their new home in Rhode Island in 1971 and Ed and Lorraine Warren the paranormal investigators who help them fight their battle against the house.
Now I'm a fan of James Wan's work but admit I only come across this film by accident (we decided to go see a film on birthday) being a 15 you don't really associate it with being scary or suspenseful (or I don't Normally anyway's) but that theory went out the door quite quick with this one. The film opens with two previous owners of the Anna-bell doll telling Ed and Lorraine how the doll is supposedly haunted and keeps coming back to them no matter what they do......at this point we started to wonder to which role this creepy looking dolls plays in the film. The film then opens to the Parren family moving into their new farm house and you instantly get a feeling of how creepy this house is going to be, the film has a feeling of being a bit of a slow burner but in a good way. James Wan manages to build up not only the main characters but also the house, background story and supporting characters all at the same level without leaving anything behind or distracting from the main storyline, something I feel a lot of films these days lack. Now being a 15 The Conjuring is not full of blood or offensive language but I still myself questioned the idea of just how some of the kids in the audience where going to cope with this film. Some moments in this film I could imagine playing on the mind of summer of the younger viewers, not through over used special effects but just by how close to the bone Wan has managed to get the storyline over. also not taking anything away from the actors. This film has a solid line up of actors from Vera Farmiga, Lili Taylor, Ron Livingston and Patrick Wilson (who is becoming a regular in Wan's films) and that's not forgetting the casting of the Parren family's daughters who may not all be household names but with stand out performances like these wont be long before they are. I though everything about this film was solid from beginning to end and for a film that had a $20 million dollar budget to take over $1000 in its opening weekend to enter into the top 10 of the highest grossing opening weekend film polls so did the audiences.
IMDB gave this film an 7.8 rating I personally would give it closer to 10, I'm not going to give to much away about this film other than I ADVISE you all to go see it. Even if your not a "horror fan" I think you will enjoy it anyway....and every one could do with a good scare every now and then.
My Scream rating is 5 out of 5.
